"Jonathan Kay is a Wellington based photographic artist and Lecturer in Photography at Massey University, Wellington. Jonathan’s practice blurs the boundaries of art and science to render the unseen and challenge the notions of landscape. Such projects as Ice Field (2016 -2019) and Nothing but Dust (2015 -2018) are site based inquiries and follow a framework of scientific ‘fieldwork’, where observation and data collection can provide insights into specific environments.
Jonathan’s practice extends the notion of drawing in a photographic sense using light and chemical reactions to render forms. Ice Field (2016 -2019) works with large scale photogram process to draw or record the structural/sculptural elements that make up the unique landscape of a glacier. He works with photography and video, but often engages with technology to extend and distort the role of the photographic document."
